Genus of understory palms in subfamily Arecoideae, with over 100 species native mainly to Mexico and Central America. They are the most popular indoor ornamental palms in the world thanks to their shade tolerance and ease of pot cultivation.
Distribution Mexico and Central America, from Mexico (Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca) to Ecuador and Bolivia; greatest diversity in southern Mexico and Guatemala.
Conservation Several species threatened; overcollection of xate (Chamaedorea spp.) for the cut-foliage export trade is a significant pressure on wild populations.
