Morphological Summary

Genus of fan palms in subfamily Coryphoideae, endemic to the Caribbean, with over 50 recognized species. They are robust single-trunked palms with palmate leaves that are green on top and silvery beneath in many species.

Distribution Caribbean: Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Bahamas, and the Lesser Antilles. Cuba harbors the greatest diversity.
Conservation Many species threatened; island endemics with fragmented habitat; pressure from land use change.
